Commitment to diversity

This story delved into the implications behind the question: Where are you really from? Our high school community is predominantly Asian, and so many students and staff have dealt with being asked this question in some way. I developed this story pitch after completing the "What it means to be an American" unit in my Honors American Literature class. For this story, I found a teacher who had been asked the question, an alumnus who had experienced racism, and a Communications Studies professor. Through this audio story, I intend to validate people's experiences and opinions about the question and microaggressions in general.

An editor on El Estoque asked the staff whether anyone wanted to cover the Gender-Sexuality Alliance's Coming Out Day celebration. After seeing no response, I decided to take up the story. This news brief delves into the logistics of the event like preparation procedures. I was also able to secure an interview with the Vice President of the club, who talked about what being part of the LGBTQ+ community meant to her and how GSA aims to create a safe place for those who identify within the group. The purpose of this story is to hopefully spread more awareness on campus and foster a more inclusive student body.

Our publication has an audits tab: each time a source is quoted in a story, the authors enter the source's name in this sheet. If a source is interviewed three times, their name turns red, meaning they can no longer be interviewed that school year. This process ensures more diversity within our sources and story pitches.
