My co-writer and I decided to use a serif font for our headline and alt copy since we thought it would fit the elegant theme of the page design and story. The white bar behind the word "legacy" helps the red word stand out on the page, attracting readers to the story. The alt copy on the right page creatively depicts statistics related to legacy admissions we found from a reputable site.

Originally, the headline for this page was "Racism within minorities." However, my co-writer and I agreed we needed a more dramatic headline, so I came up with "Oppression vs. oppression." It represents how minorities who were once oppressed by majority groups sometimes end up perpetuating the discrimination they face upon other minorities. I found the idea for the graphic from Pinterest and worked with a graphics artist to create the image on the left page.

After hearing students complain about a teacher's classroom rules, I was inspired to create this alt copy. I drew the graphics of the clipboard, phone and headline images on Procreate. The sticky notes, notebook paper and pie-chart are from Canva.

While looking through Pinterest, I found a Vogue magazine design of red glossed lips lined up on the page similar to my design above. I thought it would be interesting to incorporate lips into the spread since the story is related to toxic relationship terms, which relate to things people say. I thought the bright pink made the page pop and added to the relationship aspect of the story.

My first page design in the Sports section was part of a package. I came up with the idea to create a Snack Shack alt copy since it gives readers more information about the booth. We chose the colors for the pallette as a section, deciding upon purple and yellow—the Monta Vista High School colors.
