As a print opinion editor, I provide feedback on stories and page designs for our magazine, which comes out every six weeks. The week before we send the magazine for printing, everyone on staff designs their pages during our "production week." Production week is comprised of two days, where the staff works on their spreads together immediately after school to 7:30 PM. When a staff member isn't at late night but needs edits, they send their page through Slack. Here is an example of me telling a writer what changes to make to their column. The comments are fairly simple in this as the design is simple and already well-structured.
Editing, leadership and team building
Here is a picture of the edits (in purple) I provided for an audio story about the commodification of the holiday season. Since the writing had already gone through an entire series of copy edits, my feedback was catered towards the audio aspect of the story. My edits tell the authors how to specifically implement the changes, so they can make actionable steps to improve the quality of their work. This also allows for clearer communication at one time, so writers don't have to message me multiple times about how to fix something.
